'We at Freeman’s are thrilled to announce our upcoming program of auctions for the coming year, and for some reason, a quote from Aristotle comes to mind: “All human actions have one or more of these seven causes: chance, nature, compulsions, habit, reason, passion, desire.” The modern, antique and collectable treasures from artists, craftsmen, and craftswomen from around the world that we offer will be a chance for you to indulge in many of these actions.'

Demystifying the Cuban plunder and nationalization of art, hoping for restitution, and predicting the future of the embargo and its sanctions.

After the revolution of 1959, the Castro government nationalized assets and artwork owned by private citizens. The expropriation of what is estimated today to be $7 billion in U.S. citizen’s assets resulted in almost six decades of severe retaliatory sanctions from the U.S. The U.S. embargo of Cuba prohibited most art imports and limited the ability of American cultural institutions to work with their Cuban counterparts. Although the pending normalization of relations between the U.S. and Cuba should extend to the art market, this will raise thorny questions concerning the provenance and title of art that may have been confiscated.

Are there precedents to guide us? How will sanctions be impacted under this new administration? And how do we prepare clients to claim their looted works?

Join the Cardozo Art Law Society, FAME and the Appraisers Association of America, as we aim to unravel the current political climate with Cuba and its potential impact on restitution efforts as well as the contemporary Cuban art market.
